Games & consoles Virtual Boy

Released in 1995, the Virtual Boy is the most unusual console in Nintendo's history. Set on a stand, it displays 3D images through a red and black monochrome screen that you look at through a visor. Designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the Game Boy, it was pulled from the market after barely a year.

Sales never took off. The red and black display tired the eyes, the playing position was uncomfortable, the console was not truly portable despite running on batteries, and the catalogue stayed very thin. Nintendo ended production as early as 1996, which is what makes it one of the most sought-after consoles among collectors today.

Its rarity makes it a considerably more expensive piece than Nintendo's other retro consoles. The price depends on whether the stand and the visor are present, on the condition of the screen and, above all, on the original box. A Virtual Boy complete in box is in a different category altogether from a console on its own. Every console sold at Flip Jeux Vidéo is tested to make sure it works properly.

Only about twenty games were ever released, and some of them never left Japan. It is that tiny catalogue that explains their value: every title is hard to find, and copies complete with box and manual are especially coveted. Mario's Tennis and Wario Land are among the best known.
