In-store, we’re often asked about the best local co-op games on console. While these types of games have become a bit rarer nowadays, there are still plenty of great titles perfect for a fun night with friends. Here are some of our favorites, carefully tested for you!
Overcooked! 1 & 2
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC
Players: 2 to 4
Overcooked! is a totally chaotic cooking game where you must collaborate in the kitchen to prepare dishes under hilarious conditions. Fair warning, this game can destroy relationships or friendships!
Moving Out 1 & 2
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: 2 to 4
This game is based on the same principle as Overcooked. It’s a hilarious cooperative game where you play as a team of somewhat clumsy movers. The goal? Transport furniture and objects to the truck… while juggling with completely crazy physics! Laughter guaranteed when playing together on the same couch.
Gang Beasts
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: Up to 4
Gang Beasts is a beat 'em up party game where the goal is to be the last one standing. Beware, it’s not always about beating the others to win… Sometimes, you just need to stay still and let the others sabotage themselves! With the traps in each level and accidental eliminations (yes, even when trying to help), chaos is guaranteed — and so are the laughs.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: 2 to 4
I discovered Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime during a gaming night with friends. The game is chaotic and colorful. We spent our time running around the spaceship trying not to explode mid-flight. It’s frantic but truly funny. The key to success in this game is definitely communication. All of this to save cute little bunnies, which makes the adventure even more endearing.
It Takes Two
Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox, PC
Players: 2 (co-op mandatory)
I played It Takes Two with my girlfriend and honestly, we loved it from start to finish. We play as a couple in crisis, transformed into little dolls, and are thrust into a completely wacky world. The game surprises us with its innovative mechanics, and the key to success lies in cooperation and communication. The story is touching, and it's an original game to enjoy as a couple.
Cuphead
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch, PC
Players: 2
Cuphead is one of the most beautiful… and the hardest games I’ve tried. With its 1930s cartoon-inspired style, you’re immediately hooked. Each boss is a real challenge, and you need the patience to keep retrying. In co-op, it’s even more intense, but so satisfying when you finally win. Frustrating? Yes… but also incredibly rewarding.
Rayman Legends
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: Up to 4
Rayman Legends is a platformer I never get tired of playing. The levels are creative, the animations are smooth, and the soundtrack is amazing. It’s super easy to play, and it’s an addictive game, even for those who are less into gaming.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Players: Up to 4
I played Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury co-op on Switch, and it was a real pleasure from start to finish. The levels are colorful, dynamic, and perfect for playing together without too much hassle. Special mention to Bowser’s Fury, which brings a nice touch of novelty with its open world. It’s a safe bet for family or friend gaming nights.
Diablo III & IV
Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox
Players: Up to 4 locally
Diablo is truly an addiction for me. Slaying monsters, collecting loot, and exploring the world of Diablo, time flies when you’re playing. It’s intense, strategic, and especially super fun in co-op. Whether you're a fan of hack-and-slash or a beginner, Diablo offers hours of fun.
Minecraft Dungeons
Platforms: Switch, Xbox, PS4
Players: Up to 4
I consider this game as the Minecraft version of Diablo. However, don’t be fooled, even Minecraft newbies will find enjoyment. It’s easy to pick up and dive into the adventure.
Rocket League
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: 2 to 4 in split-screen
Who doesn’t know Rocket League? Try to score a goal in the opposing net using your remote-controlled car. It’s a simple, fast, and ultra-competitive game. Perfect for intense matches with friends.
TowerFall Ascension
Platforms: PS4, Switch
Players: Up to 4
TowerFall Ascension is, in my opinion, a must-play. The goal of the game is simple: be the last one standing in the arena. Use your bow and arrows to eliminate your opponents while avoiding their attacks. It’s a retro, fast-paced game full of twists and turns. Guaranteed laughs and hours of fun.
Streets of Rage 4
Platforms: Switch, PS4, Xbox
Players: Up to 4
This classic beat ‘em up updated for modern times is a treat. Gorgeous graphics, an epic soundtrack, and fast-paced gameplay. With friends, it’s even more fun, chaining combos together and cleaning up the streets the old-fashioned way! A real guilty pleasure.
Castle Crashers Remastered
Platforms: Switch, Xbox, PS4
Players: Up to 4
Hours of fun bashing enemies in co-op while laughing like kids. This completely wacky beat 'em up with a cartoon style, magic, improbable mounts, and memorable bosses is easy to play and super entertaining.
A Way Out
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, PC
Players: 2 (co-op mandatory)
I played A Way Out with a friend, and it’s one of my most memorable co-op gaming experiences. We play as two prisoners trying to escape. The game relies entirely on cooperation. For example, while one distracts the guard, the other digs a tunnel. The story is gripping, and you really live the game together from start to finish. It’s impossible to play solo, which makes the experience intense and memorable.
Team Sonic Racing
Platforms: PS4, Xbox, Switch
Players: Up to 4 locally
We tested Team Sonic Racing with friends, and it’s much more than just a racing game. Everything is team-based: you share items, help each other go faster, and win together. It’s fun, fast, and perfect for stress-free gaming nights.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Players: Up to 4 (split-screen), up to 8 in LAN
You never get tired of playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. With each game between friends, it’s pure fun: blue shells, surprise boosts, and guaranteed laughs. It’s the perfect game for all generations, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned racer!
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Platforms: PS4, PS5
Players: Up to 4
A colorful, funny platformer, and super well-designed for playing with others. We help each other, tease a bit, and discover creative levels full of surprises. Perfect for relaxed sessions with friends or family.
LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Platforms: Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox
Players: 2 local players
We dived into LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, and it’s simply awesome! You can relive the entire Star Wars saga through LEGO levels full of humor and charm. The game offers huge exploration freedom, epic battles, and of course, iconic characters like Luke, Han, and Yoda. It’s the perfect game for Star Wars fans and LEGO lovers, with a touch of humor and action around every corner.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Players: Up to 4
I plead guilty, I don’t play much on the Switch. However, I loved diving back into the Mario universe with New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It’s a classic platformer with fun levels, plenty of challenges, and a super colorful atmosphere. In co-op, it’s even better: we toss coins to each other, help (or not!) to reach goals, and, of course, laugh a lot. Perfect for playing with family or friends.
Super Bomberman R
Platforms: Switch, PS4, Xbox
Players: Up to 8
I tested Super Bomberman R, and it’s a true return to the classics! The principle is simple: place bombs to eliminate your enemies, but you need to be strategic. It’s fast-paced and super fun in both co-op and competitive modes. Perfect for sessions with friends, where every explosion brings its share of surprises!
Resident Evil 6
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch
Players: 2 in split-screen
I loved playing Resident Evil 6 in co-op with friends. Each campaign lets you experience the story with another player, which adds a strategic dimension. Between gunfights, puzzles, and zombie hordes, we constantly help each other to survive. It’s a great choice for those who want to experience Resident Evil in co-op, with a nice mix of action and tension.
